Just wondering if anyone has advice about this..
At my local garage shop, the till is totally obscured by lottery card dispensers and chewing gum displays. Therefore you can not see what prices are being put in the till as the display facing towards the customer can not be seen.
In addition they do not issue receipts, the till does produce them, but the assistants never hand them to the customer, so all you get is the assistant saying the total price verbally, if paying by card at least you know the total is correct as that comes up on the chip and pin box, but paying cash you know nothing!
I once asked for my receipt and the assistant said they didnt hand them out, she then quickly dropped it in a box under the till, and said there were so many reciepts in the box she could not find it again.
Also they dont have shelf edge prices on all the products, so for some things I cant even do a calculation in my head before getting to the checkout.
They also have BOGOF offers, but do not disply what the cost is, so the cost could be double what it should be to start with!
And yes, I know I could vote with my feet and go else where.
My question is, are there any statutory laws about clearly displaying prices to the customer, (particulerly at the checkout), that the shop should be following....I just can not figure out if the shop is being poorly managed or if there is some organised fiddling going on.

Perhaps there's no fraud or poor managment and it's just a shop at a garage?"Love you Dave Brooker! x"

No, there are no laws about a till display having to be visible.
It seems more common these days for people not to want to use verbal communication. What is wrong with a total being spoken to you? I's your hard of hearing I'm sure the cashier would have moved anything blocking the display. Why do people want to know what laws there are for anything? Just try speaking/communication.
It seems this countries becoming too bone idol now to bother speaking and need to have laws to force non-verbal forms of communication everywhere instead. Then when you go to the extreme of no more verbal communication such as self service checkouts, people moan because theres no person to talk to them!0 -
start asking for receipt (before they rack it up?) - i thought the till price always had to be viewable by the customer anyway..?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Well thats great, asked for some genuine consumer advice, and feel like Im being told im bone idle and have hearing and speaking problems!
I dont mind talking with the person at the till, unfortunatly though not everyone can be trusted, and they could be typing any price in. Also if anything was faulty, how could I possibly return it, I dont think a "well the assistant 'said' i could return it" would be accepted instead of a receipt.0 -
If the are typing any price in then it doesn't matter if you can see the screen then.
Under the sog act bank statements are proof of purchase.0 -
Looking at it from the other side, we always make sure that the items punched in are totally visible to the customer, they're usually pretty good at commenting if your finger slips. Much easier than trying to sort out problems later. If they won't allow a view of the till or give a receipt from the till then vote with your feet.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I'm not a 100% sure but I remember way back when I worked at WHSmith (oh the joy of the training books) that it is illegal to sell items without clear shelf edge labelling showing prices.Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0

Surely next time you go in,just ask for your receipt (before they start to serve you).0
