Switching from card meters to credit meters...help!

Options
Hi,
I am currently going through the process of buying my first flat. All is going ok so far (fingers crossed), however...
I have found out that the gas and electricity meters are card meters. I do not want to use the prepayment scheme as I have had a bad experience with them in a rented property (running out of gas on a freezing December night  !!)
Does anyone know how I get them changed over? Does it cost a lot to do?
The meters are both with British Gas.
Thanks!

  • I had my meters changed for free with e.on but check that your taffif reflects the change as E.on failed to change mine untill I pointed it out to them.

Have you been with British Gas on a billing meter recently. If so they should swap them for free.
If not they can credit check you and if you pass they'll swap them.
3rd choice pay a security deposit and then they'll do it.

When you phone up and tell them you're moving in ask them to do it then - they can do it with 2 days notice (early enough in the day).
  • I'm living with my parents at the minute so not registered with British Gas.
Hopefully the credit check will come back with no problems.
    Thanks for the advice!
