Help with electricity bill dispute

Hi,

Last year I was staying in rented accommodation sharing with other people.
We were strangers to each other.
Nobody wanted to take responsibility for the electricity bill whilst we were living there.
When we moved out the landlord passed on our details to the electricity company.

I want to pay my portion of the bill but the electricity company says I will still be liable for the whole bill if the others don't pay. I do not have contact with the other tenants and the landlord will not give me contact details for them. The electricity company says its not their problem and they consider it a dispute between us tenants.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any advice on what my legal position is as well as how i can convince the company to accept my portion of the bill without hassling me in the future.

I would guess the last student to leave would owe the most so he is liable.

I wasn't the last person to leave.

I have also not signed any agreements, the landlord passed on our names to the electricity company after we moved out. None of our names were on the bills whilst we were living there.

The only thing they have with my signature is a letter from me asking for them to accept my portion of the bill as a final payment.
