Cost of roof insulation?

Hi, I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of how much it would cost to have insulation put into my roof? I assume it varies depending on material used, and I have no idea of this yet. Upstairs there is one double bedroom, one single and a tiny bathroom and of course the stairwell - it's only a little house! A slight complication which might make a difference to the price is that the house was originally 2 properties, so there are 2 separate lofts/loft hatches to go through. There's maybe an inch or 2 of insulation up there at the moment.
A really rough idea would be great, I've no idea if we're talking tens, hundreds or thousands of pounds!!!
Thanks, Liz

Depends if you fancy doing it yourself. If so, then possibly less then a hundred may do it if you use 6" fibreglass. Vermiculite or paperbased products will cost more. But they now reccommend 12".
However there are many grants about at the moment for everyone and we had 10" of fibreglass put into our loft (we already had 2") under a grant and paid £200, which was only slightly more than I could have done it for myself.
It's made a hell of a difference, actually we paid an extra £150 and had the walls done as well, bargain.

Thanks, yes this is under one of the grants schemes. I would be expected to pay £100 towards it. So I wondered what the overall cost would be without any grant.
I wouldn't be doing it myself. It's actually a rented house so I need to think carefully about the cost which I would have to pay myself. It should make the house more comfortable and hopefully lower heating costs but I also need to decide if I'm staying here long enough to make paying for this worthwhile.
Thanks again.0 -
Tell the land lord to sort it out!
I did............. well actually I phoned them and said in lagging the loft and knocking the cost off the rent........they just said ok then.0 -
Nothing to do with landlord, it's me who wants to keep heating my bills down/ keep warmer/reduce global warming, not landlord.
My landlord isn't like your landlord, you're very lucky! How much did your insulation cost by the way?

Do you receive any benefits or have any children?
If so you should be able to get a grant for 100% of the cost0 -
Aw bless Nelly - you're a twinkly little star !
Elljay - you'll get your £100 back by way of reduced heating bills quite quickly.
I upped my insulation to the max last spring and this winter I've only used my gas fire in the sitting room on a handful of occasions and I'm sure my central heating has been working less hard.
Go for it £100 = 200 Mars bars in new economics !.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Thanks, now you've given me a difficult decision - 200 mars bars or insulation. That's a really tough one. Hmmm. I won £25 on the lottery so I'm nearly there already.
No Gazza, I don't have benefits or young children but this is subsidised I think something to do with rural poverty, everyone in 3 particular wards locally is eligible, no age, benefits etc restrictions whatsoever.

Whats the 'U' value of a mars bar?
Maybe you can line your loft with them0
