Mint Card- Problems with Service

in Credit cards
For the last 12 months i thought i had a small balance on my card (Less than £20). Today I rang toclear this as I recently found out it was potentially damaging to my credit score to have cards with zero balance wasting away..
Anyway, when i rang they said my balance was a whopping £650!!!
I have had no contact from Mint (statements, courtesy calls etc) in 12 months, and my card actually expired in April 2007...
Apparently i wrote a cheque for £800 in Feb 07 (which I am struggling to remember what for and who too- Mint won't tell me either), and I have been paying the minimum payment by direct debit since then- meaning i have only cleared a small amount of it...
Mint say it is their policy not to contact customers who do not have late payments or problems repaying- i think this is appauling as i am not even sure i was responsible for that balance- i.e. it might be fraud...
now what can I do as they say i am liable.
Their service is appauling- no new card, no check up on out of ordinary spending (i have written no other cheques), and no statements or communication (other than junk mail) sent out for this long...
I thought my account had pretty much expired, and now they say i owe them £650!!!!

A statement will be produced every month if you have a balance on the card.
As you've not got anything through the post it sounds like you're possibly registered for online statements.
I don't have a Mint card myself but from looking on their site it seems like it's pretty much the same as Egg (which I do have an account with). When a statement is ready to view they send an email reminder to you.
From the Mint site:
"Online statements - don’t forget to make your monthly payment in the usual way
We know you have a busy life and dealing with your finances is just one little part of it. If you are now receiving e-mail statement notifications instead of paper statements, please remember to check your statement online and make your monthly payment as usual."
If you are registered for online statements rather than paper ones then you'll need to log into the Mint website to check the statements.
Have they said they didn't send out another card? It could be that you've just not received it.
If you're set to receive paper statements and haven't received a card is it possible they have an old address of yours?
I can understand you're not happy but on the other hand they haven't had any reason to get in touch with you (other than sending statements). You haven't queried a year old transaction and if you're making just minimum repayments then you're the ideal customer for them.
I'd say you need to get back in touch with them and do the following:
1. Check if you're set to receive paper or online statements.
2. Make sure they have the correct address for you.
3. If a card has been sent that you haven't received then get this cancelled and reissued.
4. Find out what the cheque was for by either checking your statements online or by getting them to send a replacement paper one (they'll probably charge for a paper one).
Then once you've got all that sorted you'll know if the cheque was genuine.0
