Toshiba Laptop repair advice please

Almost a year ago I bought a Toshiba satellite pro. I have had a problem with DVD/CD player. Despite upgrading drivers etc problem remains. I am now sending it back for repair. However at the time they had a money back guarante on the laptops. I have just called about it and am told that unless I can prove I registered for this guarantee which is separate to everything else then I do not qualify. I know I registered for a warranty upgrade, cashback on the machine, an account on the Toshiba website but can find nothing else. I guess I can't do anything but any advice would be appreciated as I feel taht if they have records of all these registrations surely that proves when and where I bought thelaptop?

Also although I do regular backups I would like to backup everything on my laptop before I send for repair - can anyone advise best way to do this - I have a 160 GB WD Passport Portable Hard Drive and my laptop is only 80 GB harddrive. Would you then delete contents of harddrive as I have finance and personal writings on there?

Thanks Deb

Have you enquired what it would cost for a local computer shop to replace the DVD unit ? It may work out cheaper to pay the cost yourself rather than go through the hassle of sending it back, the risk of data being wiped, think about it !

  • Hi there. Can anyone help me please. I want to upgrade the harddrive but have been told I will need to install an operating system on it. Can I do this my self if I have a windows o/s or is this best left to the experts? The hard drive is ony 6gb with xp o/s preinstalled at present. I need at least 20gb. Also if I have a Linskys wireless router will I need a Linskys wireless pcmcia card or would another brand be compatible to make my laptop wireless at home?
All help gratefully received. Thanks.

    Thanks Deb

Just out of interest - what was the problem? I also recently had problems with the cd and dvd player of my toshiba satellite - jerky picture and distorted sound. I googled and found the answer here and it actually worked. I was about to chuck the laptop out of the window!

None of these things are hard, if you read the instructions first.;)
Sometimes laptops can be fiddly to open up, but you should be OK if you can find the service instructions. Try Google, or the manufacturer's website.
By Windows CD do you mean something that came with your laptop, or a CD that came seperately? If it came seperately, you will also need to download drivers from the manufacturer's website.
Any wireless PCMCIA card will work.
Good luck! PM me if you get stuck. But if you don't mind my asking, isn't XP terribly slow on such an old machine?
