I am currently with British gas (for my sins!) Have had so much problems with them, and would like to go to someone cheaper.
I currently pay via direct debit, my question is do i have to pay the outstanding amount off before i apply for another supplier, or do they just send you a final bill??

Yes, sassy, usually you have to pay tho if it is a small amount, they won't object. However your new supplier may want to start with a clean sheet.
Southern Electric have a good administration, and by the number of complaints, nPower and Eon (formerly Powergen) are in the same category as British Gas.0
