Gas Pricing ........... Imperial Meter Vs Metric Meter???
Just noticed our OLD Gas Meter is marked CUBIC FEET and I've read somewhere about 'Metric Gas Unit Price Rise' ..................... & that our Gas Bills are worked out in METRIC UNITS ................. how do we work out the following :-
1/ Are we (those with OLD Gas Meters) being billed correctly ?
As a Metric Unit of gas (B4 conversion in to kWh) is LARGER than an Imperial Cubic one?
2/ Nothing is mentioned on the BILL with regard to the reading being Imperial Or Metric?
3/ Is there a PRICE difference for the two types of meter .............?
4/ DOES ANYBODY know ............?
Confused ................ I am now?:o
Can anybody Help???

Check your bill, it's usually all explained on the back, including the calorific value conversion factor used for the calculation!
As a Metric Unit of gas (B4 conversion in to kWh) is LARGER than an Imperial Cubic one?
No it's not, because imperial meters record hundreds of cu FT.
2/ Nothing is mentioned on the BILL with regard to the reading being Imperial Or Metric?
Look at your meter to see if it has Cu FT or M3 on it, and then check if the correct conversion has been done as part of the calculation to kWh.
3/ Is there a PRICE difference for the two types of meter .............?
No, gas is charged for in kWh.
4/ DOES ANYBODY know ............?
Yes!
Confused ................ I am now?:o
Read your bill!

Welcome to the forum.
Presumably you are making the point that a Cubic Metre is larger than a Cubic Foot?
A unit of gas on an Imperial meter is 100 cubic feet and equates to approx 31kWh.
A unit of gas on an Metric meter is 1 cubic Metre and equates to approx 11kWh.
The price for a kWh of gas is the same regardless of the type of meter.
So as you have the older Imperial meter you need to check that your gas units have been multiplied by approx 31* to give the correct kWh.
* the calorific value of gas varies slightly.0 -
Hi Cardew,
Thanks for the reply and the explanation, if only my gas bill explained this more clearly! But they seem to put less & less information on the bill to help us work out just WHAT we are paying for ........... but at least it is a bit clearer now, Thank You.
I understood that they converted the UNITS used in to kWh, it's just that one of my neighbours has a new metric type of meter which also registers in UNITS and their use is about the same as ours, whilst their bill is much smaller .............. hence my question about the two types of meters.
Only thing is, going on your working outs, if our units used are about the same, but my gas usage is approx 30 times theirs ........... there's something a miss, as they (our neighbours) have their heating on almost all day, every day (being pensioners) and thus use a lot more gas than we do, as we are out at work for most of the day?
Perhaps there is something wrong with one of our meters??? (and NO, they are not on one of the fixed priced OAP schemes ............. making their final bill cheaper???).
Anyway its something for me to look into when I get more time.
Many thanks,

Not sure I understand the "but my gas usage is approx 30 times theirs" comment! Should that be 3 times?
If your neighbours have a metric meter and use the same number of gas units then their consumption in kWh will be 2.86 less than yours. i.e.
You use 100 gas units which is approx 3,100kWh
They use 100 units which is approx 1,100kWh.
It is very rare for a gas meter to over-read as it is simply a vane turned by the gas. If anything they would under-read(although again very rare)0 -

Please tell us which supplier does not provide all of the necessary information for you to understand how you are charged and how your bill is calculated. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
