BT Broadband, Stealth Contract Renewal

Options
Another fuming with BT thread I'm afraid. I've just phoned for a MAC code to switch to O2 but I'm tied in with them until Nov this year. It would appear that when I phoned up to report a faulty home hub last Nov they renewed my contract at the same flipping time as ordering me a new hub. I've just spent 20 minutes on the phone to their customer services but all I could get out of them was "but you've got a great deal, 2 discounts applied for the whole 12 months". I don't care!! It's still £5 a month more expensive for a service with an 8mb download limit than it is for an unlimited package with O2! It was like banging my head against a brick wall.

I was passed from pillar to post when I phoned about the hub & aparently (from their call log) one of my many ports of call was their customer loyalty dept & that's when the contract renewal must have been done. I do remember one guy saying he'd give me a discount but naievely I though that was due to the all the problems & failed tech support calls during the previous 4 months as they insisted it must have been our computers rather than the hub that was at fault (it definitely was a faulty hub btw).

Is it me? Is what I'm saying just not making sense or can anyone else see why I'm miffed at having a contract renewed to get a faulty bit of kit replaced? If I did agree to take out a new contract then I was most certainly tricked into it because I've had every intention of leaving them this month (when my original contract should have ended) since Sep last year.

I'm going to be writing them a very colourful letter when I've calmed down.

Thanks for reading,
TC

you could always ask for a copy of the agreement, either a recording of the phone conversaton etc, thought for an agreement to be binding a signature would be required tho

I agree with MDBarber - surely it is up to them to prove that you renewed, either with a signature, or some kind of record that they have told you that they intend to renew your contract. I would be tempted to pursue this, as I suspect that they have pulled a fast one here by pretending that the discounts they were offering you were by way of an apology and failing to explicitly mention the contractual terms.
