Banks and your money

I went to my local bank today and wanted to withdraw a largish sum of money as I had to pay a bill. My account is basic and I just pull out my dough and place it elsewhere. Was told that I could only draw out money over the counter if it was over £500 otherwise I would have to go to the Post Office or the autoteller to do it. So I said ok, I want this much. The woman them hummed and hawed and conferred with her colleague beside her and said, I can give you this much but not the amount you want. I'm like, WHOSE MONEY IS THIS????? It's a basic account, they state I can't draw out under £500 over the counter but when I do draw out over £500 they say I can't have it. In the end I just said give me the balance and she was in such a flipping state, you'd think it was her money I was pulling out. The account pays sod all interest and I usually pull the cash out as soon as it hits the account but been on hols so more in than normal. Makes my blood boil, it's an instant access account so don't try and hold onto my cash thank you very much. BANKS, HUH!!!!

Looks like you need to get a new bank! Might aswell get a referral bonus and/or free cash gift for opening one (have a look on the referrers board), I use First Direct and they're great (helps theres lots of HSBCs in all the places I need them hehe).0

I was with FD and always had excellent service from them. I wonder how long I have to leave my account with A&L before I can go back after getting the £25 cash?Thenotsowyzewun wrote:I use First Direct and they're great

Yeah banks seem to think they can do what they like with OUR money, and banks with call centres doubly so! My ISA has been screwed around by Abbey and Halifax something chronic the last 4 months, despite me telling them "not to touch or move my money" they're still playing ping-pong with it(see my posts on ISAs board if interested).
With much sympathy

PS I do wonder what they think of me sometimes though

I could be off the mark here but have vague memories that some banks started putting a cap on the amount that waxs allowed to be withdrawn in cash in an attempt to stop fraud. It may be your money but you do expect the bank to handle it with a certain degree of care and not give out to any old Tom, !!!!!! or Harry. Maybe the T&C on the account that you have do not allow large amounts of money to be withdrawn ... or maybe simply the bank has a cap on the amount of cash that can be with drawn. I know with my own bank I have had to give them a few days notice to have the required amount of cash available for me.
It is a simple case that the account you currently have is not giving you the servie you need and therefore you should look for a new account (my experience has shown this to be very straightforward). As to which bank? Sit down and think about what you want from an account, good rate of interest? internet access? ability to call into a branch? ability to withdraw large sums of cash? a £500 cash card? temporary free overdraft (for transition period)? low cost authorised overdraft? free travel insurance? etc. etc. Talk to tham all and make your choice ... beware the vent board .. I think every bank has been criticised on it at some point

IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0
