We recently moved to a new house where a pre-payment e-on meter is fitted. I would like to change to a direct debit method and possibly switch to a cheaper electricity supplier. However, I am advised by e-on that they will charge me £50.00 to have the pre-payment meter removed - eek was trying to save money not spend more. Anyone have any experience of this - and is it possible to change for nothing!!!??

You could switch and ask your new supplier, but they may ask you to go through a credit check before they do it. If not they may ask for a deposit that you will get back with interest. Was this a deposit with E-on?0

That is really strange. I moved into a house which had prepayment meters for both Gas and electric. I was with British Gas and when I asked about swapping my meters they said I would have to pay a deposit for £130 PER meter and they would hold this for a year and if I defaulted on they payments they would keep the deposit. I wasnt really happy about this as it wasnt my debt that forced the meters to be installed.
I left it a couple of years and one day Powergen knocked on my door and asked me about changing to them. I explained that I had pre pay meters and didnt want them, the Powergen agent told me to swap to Powergen and they would install me new meters free of charge.
I swapped and they put me new meters in for free and i have stayed with Powergen ever since.0 -
In the Budget energy companies have been told to help those on pre payment meters, so i'm guessing our prices for gas and lecky will drop? If so is it not worth sticking with a meter?0

Powergen only started charging to get prepayment meters taken out in the middle of last year.0 -

BUT it will take up to six weeks strange how the energy companies have just started charging to swap pre payment meters, guess now they may drop charge and the goverment could take the credit or am I being a cynic!!!!0
