  • One thing that may help you is to buy an eye mask to sleep in especially if you have nearly luminous curtains like i have and the sun is shining  i find if i've been up all night that this helps me. Failing that you can always find another use for it ;):o :rotfl:

    Made me laugh lolol

My hubby used to swear by ear plugs when he tried to sleep in the day...............dont know if another use is available for them? ;)

    HI Huxley
I worked nights for a.n.other large supermarket chain for 5 years. The hardest was the first three months. The worst part of the night for me were the couple of hours before the last one when I really found it hard in the beginning(the last hour perked me up no end)

We had only a 15 min break and then a 45 min break in 10 hours but you do get used to it. I realise that when you read this you will have done your first shift and I hope it went ok. It really is important that you get as much sleep as you can: the men I worked with went home to bed but I just snatched moments when I could while the children were small- you can function but long term i think it was sleep deprivation, ******up body clock and bizzare eating habits that gave me high blood pressure.

Oh by the way pro-plus caffeine pills really helped me in the beginning.

Pro-plus was the way to go when I worked nights too, and found that I could never sleep for a few hours afterward as I needed to have an 'evening'. As I was a student at the time, it was totally acceptable for me to have a southern comfort or two before falling asleep on the sofa at 8am!

My boyfriend has worked nights for 4 years. On sunday he will sleep as late as possible up until lunctime ish. He does find it difficult getting to sleep when he gets home and stays up at least an hour before trying to sleep. He rarely eats proper meals during the week, maybe one proper meal and the other days snacks. He also has blackout linings on the curtains. Another helpful thing is to have a fan on in the bedroom ( winter and summer) this creates a "background" noise which you soon get used to and thus cuts out alot of other noise that may otherwise wake you.
    Good Luck

  • I work continetal shifts, doing three nights every other week. You never get use to them but I find they go quicker than the days. I never eat anything after midnight except fruit mainly oranges and try to just drink water. I find three to six the worse, and its noticable, most things go wrong around four. I would'nt recommend nights to anyone the only reason I do them is the time off I get with the job and being single helps.
I use to work in a supermarket on nights, once fell asleep while standing up and fell into the sweets I was facing up!
