Nonsense first answer of mine ... sorry. If it is cable, you'll have to get a router from your cable supplier and most/all don't suport home networks.

When I had cable I ran from their router into an old PC with IPCop on it and from there to a cheap 4 port hub.

    dehk is confused :)

I'd go for one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?intStoreID=8&intCatID=109&intSubcatUID=1148

I'd personally probably go for the linksys.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

I'm on cable and have a Netgear rp614, e.g. RP 614 It just worked and has been trouble free.
    Move along, nothing to see.

    It'sa frequent occurence :)

Or better described as my natural state.

If it is Virgin Cable what I said above still holds, if it is adsl my Zyxel p-600 4 port switch and firewall hasn't flickered in 6 months does all the DHCP and NAT I could wish for, hasn't been switched off and doesn't get warm.

It's the modem, not the router you have to get from the cable company ;)

I'm currently on my third modem in 8 years (one died, one couldn't handle the last round of speed upgrades).

I'm also on my second router (at one point I used a PC to do routing but it was overkill, and took up far too much room).

Personally I like Linksys cable/asdl routers (not an asdl only router as they have the modem built in).
I'm currently using a Linksys WRT54GS V2 which is roughly the equivalent of the WRT54GL now, it's a wireless router but you can turn the wireless side of it off, and it's very simple to install - basically turn off the modem, connect the router to the modem and PC's then turn the modem on, wait about 60-90 seconds for it to finish booting, then turn the router on.
Both models mention can connect up to 4 PC's via the built in wired connections* (it's got a 4 port switch), or more via wireless (or a mix of both).

I've currently got the older WRT54GS connected to our cable modem, then up to 4PC's, a Wii and DS and it's pretty reliable :)

*If you hook them up to an external switch you can add additional wired machines (I think up to about 50:eek: ), my one is hooked up to an old 8 port switch for when i'm working on friends machines and need to connect them to the network/internet (it saves unplugging on of our machines).

Why not just buy a normal wireless router? Most of them as standard have 4 ports on the back anyway. And then you always have the option to go wireless if you want.

You certainly don't need to buy a router from your cable company although I think Virgin do sell Netgear ones, or used to.

Personally I'd get a wireless one and disabel the wireless if they don't need it. Then it's there if they ever require it.

    Wireless Cable routers

    Wired only cable routers
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

    Hi,

Can I connect this router with Virgin? and is it compatible with Vista?

    Thanks
