Hi,
in the process of purchasing a house and hopefully completing soon. My question is, when do we start paying council tax? Is it once we buy it or actually living in it, bearing in mind there will be probably a couple weeks in between for moving in, fitting carpets etc.
Thanks!

council tax is due from the date of purchase however an empty and substantially unfurnished property can have a Class C exemption for a maximum of 6 months - you'll need to contact the local council and ask for an application form.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

I was told by my council to send them a simple email upon entry saying "entered unfurnished" and they would take it from there for me!0
