is it true that if you disconnect the microwave from the mains, you save 50 pounds from your electricity bill. at least that was one of the tips in this month's sky magazines.

it,s true that you will save some money and energy, however i find it hard to beleive it will be £50 a year.
i suspect £50+ might be a more realistic figure for switching off all none esssential electricals around the house;- tvs left on standby, dvd,s sky boxes, phone chargers left on, hi fi,s, etcPlease note, we've had to remove your signature because it was sh*te!0 -
If my maths are correct, for that to be true it would have to be pulling c50Wattts in standby mode. Can't honestly see it pulling more than 1 or 2W.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0

its down to machines with digital clocks or tv/dvds etc being on standby, as to whether the £50 per year is correct - who knows.....smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

NO absolute rubbish!

How much did they say that you would save if you unplugged the Sky box? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Go to Maplins and buy yourself an energy meter. I bought one on offer for about £10. Fascinating. I'd LOVE to know how they make some of these calculations, because using the meter, I worked out I would have to unplug, my tv,dvd, skybox, my two hi-fis, my microwave, the dishwasher and washing machine, bedside alarm clock and my printer, which would save me around £40 per year!
Which after the inital boot up each day of the printer, DVD, Skybox and hi-fis would probably be counter balanced. My TV uses 2 watts per KwH on standby, my microwave was about 1 watt. Take the cost per unit of electricity (especaially like me where the house is on Econ7 at night) and the savings are minimal.
Yes I do agree that if everyone in the whole country switched everything off we might save some energy.
One minor point, I read on the BBC that one day last week (I think it was last week) there was a National Energy Ssaving Day. Ironic that more power was generated that day then there usually is!
