What you need to find out is what this 'tape' was and what it's apparent purpose was when fitted (if any). Also you need a photograph of the 'hole' in axle & what the cause of the hole was. If the cause was corrosion - there's no way that all the corrosion took place in 5 months, it is likely the corrosion was there to such a degree that the car was not satisfactory when sold.
You also need to be careful of allowing the vehicle inspect & report to be done by the garage which sold you the vehicle. You could ask the RAC for a report on the car or just on these items, to give their opinion on whether they think the hole is likely to have been there 5 months ago.
You then start writing letters asking the garage to pay for repairs, and indicate that you intend to go to court if necessary.
If you do decide to go to small claims it will cost you about £35 - 50 to start with, it would be at this point I suspect the garage might make you an offer - partial payment. If you don't like it and the RAC say you have a good case, then to proceed to court will cost a similar amount £35 - £500 -
HeavenlyGlee, just for your help the propshaft is basically a long metal tube that runs from the gearbox to the wheels (via a device called a differential). You can see them on large wagons, spinning around as the vehicle moves along. Think of it the same way as a broom handle, the gearbox is your hands, the broom head is the wheels. Ok a silly analogy but I'm sure you understand.
Nearly all rear wheel drive cars have a propshaft, nearly all front wheel drive cars do not need one. AWD cars such as yours usually have at least one.
Tape wrapped around the propshaft could be anything, it could be from the factory packaging, it could have been picked up from the road (although most propshafts are hidden away behind shields). I can't think why anyone would put it there unless perhaps one end of the propshaft had a leaky seal, and it was bodged to stop fluid leaking out. In fact, if thats the case then it could be that the differential fluid leaked away at that point, which caused the diff to fail prematurely. If something like that happened then I think you have a very clear case to present to the warranty company, a case of a massive bodge being done to hide a rather important fault.
A differential connects one end of the propshaft to the wheels, its needed because without it the wheels would not rotate in the same direction, and without a differential you would not be able to go around corners.
The hole in the axle could be rust, or a puncture, it could be anything really, even a missing bit of rubber or such.0 -

I would like to thank everyone for their help and comments.
I never had the car checked out when I bought it and this was the 1st problem that has happened since Ive been driving it. I bought it in good faith!!!
I assumed that this tape wrapped around the prop was definetly done before I got the car. Also a MOT was done a month before I bought the car - who can say that you can trust those people.
But I have decided to sue the dealership and claim back the money I had to pay to get my car back. Cos the warranty people dont want to know and I am in the process of writting a complaint letter to them.
Thanks again for your help0
