OU: ICT degree

  • I did an OU degree in Physical Science. I accepted before I started that it had some limitations relative to a normal physics degree - mostly that I'd do limited lab work, just 3 weeks' worth. That meant, quite rightly, that I'd struggle to get a practical science job (although I did consider doing an MSc to solve that problem). In the end I got a good job that wasn't scientific but used the skills I developed. I honestly believe I got that job (and other interviews/offers) in large part because the employers respected that it wasn't an 'easy option', and that I developed skills at least equivalent to those at other universities.

The other advantage, especially for younger people, is that you can get good quality, long term work experience alongside your degree. These days that is at least as important as the degree itself in getting a good graduate level job.
