Credit card surcharges

Hi

I wish to make a purchase from a retailer, its high value and as such I wish to use my credit card for the transaction. The retailer wants to charge me an additional 2.5% in 'surcharges' which in this case means I have to pay almost 50 quid for the pleasure of using my credit card

Is this acceptable practise or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks

This is a practice that does tend to occur on high value items, usually cars or holidays in my experience.

It all depends how much the seller values your business. If you say that you are not prepared to pay the merchant fee and will walk away otherwise then they may back down. I have seen this successfully done with car dealers.

Alternatively can you reach agreement perhaps where you split the cost between you, hence only incurring a charge of £25 each ?
  • If you're wanting to pay by CC to get the Section 75 protection rather than to borrow the money/get cashback on the card purchase you could just pay £100 on the card and the rest some other way (cash, cheque etc). This way you might be able to persuade the seller to waive the fee - but even if you can't it will only cost you an extra £2.50.
