Hi, I don't know if this is in the right place, but here I go!
Have been looking for a A level tutor for daughter for this summers exams.I am not a pushy parent, just a concerned one as she has had really poor teaching during the last year in one particular subject, bad enough that all bar 2 of her cohort failed an exam paper with a U grade.Hadn't been taught a whole section of the course!!!!!!! The other papers were also lacking great chunks of teaching
Think I have found one, a post grad, who has tutored from key stage 3 to A level & beyond. Sounds a good guy. But, & this is a big but, they have asked me to suggest an hourly rate as they don't know what to charge[ haven't tutored for a couple of years] I have no idea what to say, most sites that show tutors are asking up to £35 ph!!!!! I can't afford this, its way much more than I earn an hr!!
Can anyone help?? pleeeeese!!!

i would of thought it was a case of weighing up what you can afford against what you are prepared to pay.... then negotiate
in my eldest daughters case, she got into the habit of writing revision notes whilst studying her gcse and it paid off she got 6 x A's, 4 x B's and 1 C
last year in her AS levels, she got 4 x A's and isnow predicted A grades for A2's
all this is down to her revising as the year goes on , so that come breakpoint (mid may) she is ready to read notes, rather than spend time preparing themsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Thanks for the reply, my daughter also writes revision notes, highlighted, cap letters etc. She is very organised, its a shame the same can't be said for the teaching. She too had brill GCSE results 2xA* 8A 2B's [I know, too many, but the school forces them to this many]
Has so far taken AS x4 now this year is taking 4 A2 plus 1 extra AS, because she dared to drop 1 of her other AS subjects.again no option, if you don't take this amount they ask students to leave the schooll!!!!!!
Will negioate with the tutor, after all they must want to earn /help as they contacted us when i put an email out in the local uni.2011, this will be my year .0 -
You could always offer a trade: offer what you think you can afford, plus something they'd like - home made cakes, whatever your skill is etc.
Also if your daughter puts the effort in herself (and it sounds as if she does) then would she need a weekly session, or would fortnightly be enough? On her own she might get through things faster than in a class, for example. And once pointed in the right direction she might get on quite well.
Another thought is whether another parent would like to share the cost of a tutor with you? If the tutor doesn't mind.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
My daughter got A on As Sociology gaining full marks on one paper. The following year she got rubbish teacher who was off absent a lot and was predicted a C. I found a tutor who.s first subject was maths, second Sociology. I paid £20 an hour for 8 weeks before A level and she got an A grade. She said she learnt more in 8 weeks with him than in a year with other teacher. He downloaded past papers etc and had her writing exam questions and he prompted her on points to include. It was well worth it. She is now in her 2nd year at uni0

I used to tutor and I would say the going rate is about £20-25 per hour. This will vary according to the tutor, whether they travel to you, what level they are teaching and A level is always more expensive and also the region you liv in.
If you use a company like www.personaltutors.co.uk , which is the company I used to tutor for, you will find that there is an extra fee on top of the hourly fee. For instance I used to have to forward about £5 per teaching hour to personaltutors, so as I would always visit my students at home by the time I had considered petrol money, travelling time and fee to the agency, to make it worse my while, the hourly rate had to be higher. I am a professional and intend to be paid as such!
As the person you found is not a professional teacher I would say sugget a lower payment like £18-£20 per hour and pay them cash as an incentive, as cash is always nicer than having to wait for cheques to clear!
Also be careful as he won't have been CRB checked, will he?LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Hi I have a maths tutor for my daughter he charges £20 per hour but he always stays longer. I found him through a agency for tutors but we dont put it through the agency otherwise it would be £25 per hour,
I always make sure I am around even though I know he has been discloure checked0 -
January20, thanks for the info, he has a CRB so no probs, & he won't be left alone with her in any case. No chance in our house, there is always someone in & out!!!!
We have come to an arrangement with the fees, thank goodness!
Hopefully all being well he starts next week.2011, this will be my year .0 -
How can this person have all this tutoring experience but have no idea what to charge?0

just to update on this thread, so called tutor bailed at last minuite!!! Made loads of excuses eash time HE arranged a tutorial & failed to turn up, we were more than accomadating, thinking he was having bad luck etc etc. In the end he failed to turn up & wouldn't even answer his phone or return messages.
Considering HE was the one to reply to the email I am apalled the way he acted. If he had a change of heart he only had to ring & say so. As it is my daughter has not been able to find a tutor, nearest suitable was 60 miles away!!
We now just have to hope all the self teaching will pay off.
And just to top it all, the job she had set her heart on , she was turned down for, result, one very distressed, stressed daughter.

That's really awful for you and your dd - I hope she's having an easier time than mine with her A levels, mine is convinced she's failed everything and is deffering for a year from Uni and planning to retake 2 of her 4 A levels again next year!
My dd is also waiting to hear about a p-t job she's applied for in a travel agents - she gave up her well paid makro job due to the stress of exams and the fact they wouldn't change her hours like they said they would to fit in with exams."There is a light that never goes out"0
