Set Up Connection From Scratch

I can't get online with my pc so need to set up connection with my new AOL router, I have already been online with the pc but when my daughter tried using her desktop it didn't connect automatically as she was a new user, so instead of asking me what to do she decided to change the internet connection settings herself:o , God only knows what she did but now we can't use the pc to get online.I know the router is working because I'm online with my wireless laptop and that connects instantly. The network connections window on the pc shows the LAN is connected but when I click to go online it gives the usual "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". WHY NOT!! if the router is working and the LAN is connected then what's the problem?
Also since this problem my pc doen't start up correctly, it brings up a screen full of text with options of how to startup and every time I have to select "last know configuration"
Is my pc broke? Should I reboot?

can anyone offer any solutions before I call the technical helpline,

Quickest dirty way out is to go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and choose a restore point before she started messing.

Thanks Conor, I just did the system restore and on restart it went srtaight to the
Del: Enter Setup F12: Boot Manual
page and then to a screen full of text starting with;
We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
Then some more text followed by the options
SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT

LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION

START WINDOWS NORMALLY

It is already on the last option so I let the timer countdown but it just keeps going to the Del: Setup page and then back to the screen full of text and so on.
I don't want to do the wrong thing
What shall I do?

Hi,

did you pick a restore point prior to daughter changed settings, and not just the last restore point, which might've been after?

I chose march 6 for restore point, just chose startup to "last known configuration" and it said SYSTEM RESTORE INCOMPLETE
windows could not restore to march 6
what now?

I just tried system restore again to march 1 which is well before any problems started but again it said:
RESTORATION INCOMPLETE
your computer cannot be restored to:
01 march 2008
system checkpoint
no changes have been made to your computer

I'm getting worried now, is it a virus or something?
