How about unmarried couples transferring money to buy NS&I index linked certificates in each others' names and in trust? Is this tax avoidance or just a way to beat inflation? If you can buy in childrens' names, then wouldn't unmarried couples be fine too?0

Assuming you are married, instead of transfering all the savings to the non or lower tax payer can you just have the interest earnt from a joint account paid into the non tax payer sole account?0

No. The interest earned on a joint account is split between you for tax purposes from the moment it is earned.
