Can anyone offer any advice on the quickest/easiest/cheapest way to block up a serving hatch? we want to wallpaper over it, if that makes any difference?

thanks in advance

Fill in with breeze block, then plaster it, then paper. Though i'd think twice about removing it as we find ours very useful. We renovated ours by fitting new doors, and "ogee"-profile architraves.
  • We removed ours as soon as we moved in. Got a relative to help as we are clueless with DIY

    Knock out old frame
    Add wooden frame
Cut plasterboard to size and place on either side of the hole
    Plaster over and smooth down

As Ringo said, they belong to the era of Abigails' party, very few homes should have a serving hatch unless you have a 70s retro house.

That's just your opinion :) Our hatch goes between modern oak kitchen to modern lounge/dining area and doesn't look out of place at all. Visitors have commented how useful and good our hatch looks. The old hatch was an eyesore as it had badly fitting louvre doors so i'd say how good it looks depends on the styling and ironmongery (hinges, handles).
For me it's very practical and something i could not do without as i'm prone to falling so dont really want to carry dinner through the hall. With a puppy around our ankles it's been a godsend and lets us keep an eye on him when we are in the kitchen. Also lets whoever is in the kitchen talk to those at the dinner table so it's more sociable too when entertaining guests. I think it adds to the character of a house too.

We too have a hatch and think its fantastic.
We have a modern kitchen and it leads to the living room.
Brilliant for the kids passing cups of tea through !!!

Wouldn't be without it.....and believe it is Retro!

thanks everyone, just one more question - going with ringo's suggestion, how long would it be before we could paper?

    many thanks

Sorry Merlot, don your hard hat! LOL
I too disagree, Yes some hatches do look outdated and old fashioned. But about two years ago I modified one for a customer and lined it with American White Oak and fitted a nice moulding around the outside. Combined with their new very modern kitchen I have to say it looked stunning! Just wish I still had the pictures so I could put it on my website :-(

  • Just to warn you.. we can now see some small cracks around the plaster where the work was done.

I bet you could be putting wallpaper over it as soon as the plaster fully dries
