H4 headlamps
I'm looking for some good quality "brighter" H4 headlights for a Peugeot 106. I've realised that the factory ones are probably dying, making driving on poorly lit roads a bit of a hazard.
Which ones would offer a good balance between budget and "brightness"?
thanks!
edit-i've just noticed Lidl will have some next week, are these particularly bright, or "standard" ones?

Go to Halfords and buy a pair of their super-bright bulbs. Can't remember the exact name but they are excellent.

i find that most of the brand name bulbs like osram or ring that are brighter are good, they are brighter than normal and last for ages....work permit granted!0

I personally have a set of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Philips-Xtreme-Power-H4-80-Brighter-Headlight-Bulbs_W0QQitemZ140211692611QQihZ004QQcategoryZ72235QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem and the brightness is noticeable, particularly if you compare it with the standard halogen foglight bulbs,0 -
i run the phillips xtreme 80%+ and theyre great
if you have any wiring skills, test that full battery voltage is reaching the bulbs...on my older vw's there is quiet a voltage drop, a simple cheap relay kit solves this so the full voltage reaches the lamp, have a look at the chart below to show what a massive differance a couple of volts makes
10.5V : 510 lumens
11.0V : 597 lumens
11.5V : 695 lumens
12.0V : 803 lumens
12.5V : 923 lumens
12.8V : 1000 lumens ←Rated output voltage
13.0V : 1054 lumens
13.5V : 1198 lumens
14.0V : 1356 lumens ←Rated life voltage
14.5V : 1528 lumens

i would recommend this website for buying better bulbs. Used lots of time and very good service.

i would also recommend the Osram Night breaker bulbs. Very good.
I wouldn't look at fitting higher wattage bulbs - one it could melt your wiring if you dont upgrade it. Two it could melt your lenses or reflectors if thery are plastic, three it could be illegal if they are too bright.
Best you can do is get decent bulbs, make sure the reflectors are as shiny as they can be and make sure the lenses are clean and the beam pattern is focusing light in the correct way.0 -
I bought my Philips X-Treme from here
http://www.carbulbsdirect.com
They were selling them cheaper than anybody else at the time, don't know how they compare now, and sent them out very quickly. They also do cheaper H4 bulbs if you didn't want to spend that much.0 -
Occasionally Lidl sell "+50%" bulbs (these don't appear to be the ones on sale next week unfortunately) - I've used these and they're very good for the money (£1.99/pr).
Osram "Silverstar" scored very highly in an Auto Express test; they're widely available on the web, via eBay etc.0 -
ive currently got a set of these osram night breakers in my focus, i dont think they are just as good as the last set i had which were ring high output bulbs.still good though.
osram says these are 90% brighter....work permit granted!0
