What about exchanging website links with other small biz in your own area? I think its a good idea.

Yes, I think I understood what you meant, but I was trying to pre-empt a list of posts saying "Hi I'm a hairdresser from Hemel Hempstead, if you're local to me add your link to my website www. etc"

Because, being a website numpty, I wasn't sure how people would take up your suggestion without some prompting, IYSWIM.

There's possibly a mixed reply to that, since those who have some understanding of SEO might suggest that having many unrelated link-backs to your own site could hamper your site rankings, whilst on the other hand their is a possibility that any more people could find out about your own campaign.

I suppose, in short, that you would have to fill your own site with lots of strange, weird and wonderful links in order to reciprocate and this could lead to confusion about what your own site is really about (to visitors).

Selected links to sites that have some similar interest and are themselves reasonably well ranked would do you more good, but are harder to find.
