For you Newcastle People - have you ever been to that random pub on the seafront called the Grotto? Where its in an underground cave?? I thinks its either in Whitley Bay or Near North Shields?
I used to live in Sunderland as a kid and Its one of the strongest memories I have of the place!!

sorry to derail the original thread....
yeah, that pub's by the national trust lighthouse at cullercoats (i think) or something isn't it? you have to go down a lift in the middle of the cliff to get to it, very cool.
if you want some nice and very quiet beaches head up the coast to druridge, or even further past Alnmouth, Newton by the Sea is lovely!
Definately have a look round the Baltic, Maybe the Centre for Life. Lots of good shops in Newcastle too! Go to Tynemouth Metro station on a sunday morning for a really good flea market.
A bus to Kielder Water is quite nice, lots of sites at hadrians wall, most are english heritage. Vindolanda is a good privately owned site.
If you're driving there are plenty of nice walks around Northumberland, especially in the Cheviots.0 -
Yeah - I dont really remember where it was - for some reason they just stuck in my head!!
I was about 8 when I lived there - far too much booze has destroyed the brain since!

hi im also from up north and saw your question of where to go on family break in newcastle.. obviously in depends on what you want to do but you can use the metro to get virtually anywhere and its reasonably priced, the coast South shields, whitley bay is nice and you can get the ferry from north to south shields and vice versa. Beamish museum is nice and also alnwick gardens (northumberland) If you want to stay in Newcastle then check out the quayside including the bridges, the baltic and the sage. hope you enjoy your time up here

The grotto pub is on marsden beach in south shields i pass it everyday on my way to work, its basically a pub built into a cave. It has, i understand ,had several new owners in the past few years. It is a long way down to the beach and pub if the lift isnt working but it seems to work most of the time and its fun counting the stairs. Its a lovely beach and also has marsden rock which is like a nature reserve.0
