Claiming back PAYE tax with no payslips and wage varying depending on hours worked...

Options
I'm not sure this is the right area of the forum so please bear with me...

For the last 2 years I've been a teacher and am now on the correct tax code. Before that, for a year I was studying for my PGCE and whilst doing so, working at a pub for extra cash. Before that I worked 3 jobs (one office, one shop job at weekends and in a pub some evenings). Even with these 3 jobs my income was quite low. Prior to that I had a variety of quite low paid jobs, mostly below £15K. I was on the same tax code for years which I think was just Basic Rate.

I believe I am entitled to some tax back, but I have little documentation to show (when I moved last year a box of paperwork got waterlogged and became illegible) and the forms I have seen asked me to state how much I earned each month. That depended on the hours I worked! I have no idea what to put.

I paid tax and NI on all my jobs, never cash in hand - can I get copies of my P60s or payslips from anywhere? Or can the tax office just look over their own records? I'm really stuck here... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you.

If you dont have the original P60's/P45's from the employers you worked for in the period you want to claim, then contact them (the employers) and request a Statement of Earnings from them.

When you have all the documentation**, send it with a letter (No HMRC forms are needed) requesting a repayment of overpaid tax.

** If you cannot get all the documentation for any reason, explain this in your letter.

In the letter, starting from 5th April of the year which you claim starts, list in order your employers giving approxinmate dates that you worked there if you don't know the actual dates.

This will help HMRC when they check your employment history to see if it corresponds with what information they hold and whether or not it requires updating.

If they need any further information they will write to you explaining what they need.

  • Thank you so much! That's really helpful. I'll get on the case.
