  • mmmm because this forum came up on a weekly digest I assumed it was new....... but 2008?

Ok here goes anyway. There is also another side - what about those who are trying to get people to stop their standing orders and can't? What? Yes you did read correctly.

A couple of years ago I took over the membership admin of our scout group. Our scout master was fed up of handling cash and worrying about who paid what, making sure someone was there with change etc, so persuaded all the parents to sign up for standing orders for their monthly subs. (Our charity bank account wouldn't let us do direct debits.)

At first this was wonderful - no more cash handling, the parents sign a form and I check the statements when they come in. Ok, it doesn't alwys go smoothly and changing our amount this year was a pain - 90 forms to issue and chase - but it is easier. Plus those with online access just had to sign the form to say they had noted the new amount and would sort it out for me.

The only problem is if someone leaves and forgets to cancel. Usually a phone call is sufficient to remind them, but I have three people who left just before I started and we no longer have contact details for them. I've tried asking if any of our members are still in touch with them. I've been to the banks to ask if they can contact them on our behalf, but first I have to work out which bank they're with from the line in the bank statement and the lady in our local Santander said it couldn't be done. So I have three people each paying £9 a month for nothing for the last two years.

    Let's hope they read this!
  • AOL

Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I took out AOL broadband about 10 years ago and was paying £15.99 a month for it. I only used it for about 3 years, but carried on paying it, even after moving home a few times. I did call them a few years ago to tell them that I no longer used it but the guy on the phone made out that I still had to pay them a charge to use my AOL account. The fee was never actually changed though and I only cancelled it about 2 years ago - and I still have my FREE AOL email. Does anyone know if I have a case of reclaiming all the money I paid to them and if so, how should I go about it? Thanks
  • Hello,

My sister has just turned 18 and was looking for a job when she was contacted by an 'agent', she was told it was for a sales job with high pay and she was told that she had to sign 3 mobile contracts in order to get started.

After signing the contracts, she was told to wait to hear from him.

Long story short, he is nowhere to be found, has all the documents and contracts and my sister is now paying over £100 a month.

Is there a way to cancel these DD payments in the branch? She is with Natwest.

Is it possible to report these people as fraud?

    Please advise.

    Many thanks,
  • Sorry for being really dim but is it ok to cancel Direct Debits for British Gas as I have moved to another provider. It still says the DD is active but obviously I shouldn't need to pay any more money to them as I've paid my final bill to them. I should cancel it on my online banking?

Tell the bank that you want the card hot listed or hot carded. This way the merchant can not know the new number. This should work no matter what country your card is issued in. If they refused. Call back and report your card lost. A customer service rep told me that if you report the card lost or stolen. No company (except the bank) can access the new number.

I wish reps would not peddle this rubbish......

You can put whatever marker on a card and a CPA will still be processed.
See below post as to why.

    Is spot on.

The cancel side is working, although it does not have ALL retailers on it and even then some are ignoring the stops placed.

  • I had a standing order set up on my account with Santander, which I only should be able to set up! I cancelled this standing order when I entered into a dispute with the company (also reporting them to trading standards) as they were not doing what they were being paid for. This company somehow set up another standing order starting months later. You can see clearly on the mandate form that there is completely different writing on the form where the date is. I complained to Santander that I had not reinstated this standing order and that it was fraudulently set up. I wanted them to secure my account, which they could not guarantee. They also said that it was not fraud as I had given access to my account. Apparently once a standing order has been set up, someone can just reset the standing order after you cancel, all they need is a photo copy of your form and change the date!!! Is this right?:(
