Hi

We were just looking at out gas and electricity prices and amounts so we can switch suppliers as per Martin's advice (and yes we will be switching again!)

Anyway I expected us to spend more on gas as we have gas CH, gas fire in lounge and gas hob but we actually spend more on electricity (twice as much!!!). Admittedly gas is much cheaper than electricity but even so I was shocked.

Is it down to daily use of the tumble drier?? Does that eat up the electricity??

What else uses up the electicity?? Kids have a games console we only have 2 tvs, only 1 normally on at a time. Have 2 pc's obviously have lights, cooker also electric, where else can money be saved??

Thanks for your views and comments!!

I tend to spend more on electric too - ours was £103 this quarter compared to £76 i think it was for the gas. Im with Swalec for bo1th.

We also have GCH , gas hob.
Electric wise we have lights, all the kitchen appliances, PC, Xbox, 2 tvs, video, ntl box, dvd player. (one tv and video in sons room)

The tumble drier does tend to eat a fair bit and i begrudge having to put it on but in wales i wouldnt get much dried if i didnt use it occassionally.

There is a thread on here somewhere for saving gas and electric this winter - dont know how to post a link so im sure someone else will be along soon who can post it - thats always good for reducing bills - maybe soem of the ideas will be of use for you

    Hi Furrypig,

We don't have gas where I live, only electricity so I can't help you. :o

You should get more replies to this on the Utilities board so I'll move your thread across for you.

The things that "eat" electricity are the one that heat up, Storage heaters, elec fire, kettle, Tumble drier, hair drier, etc

The UK average is 3,300kWh for Electricity and 20,500kWh for gas.

So working on an average of, say, 10p/kWh for Electricity and 2.5p/kWh for Gas, Mr & Mrs Average will pay £330 for Electricity and £512 for gas.
  • I am obviously not Mr & Mrs Average!!!

I have a two bedroom house with a wife that is always moaning about it being cold. We have gas CH, oven/hob and fire. Our gas bill is always more than electric unless we have guests staying then the electric shoots up (electric shower).

If you could average it out the gas is about £40 pm and electric a tad under £30 respectively.
Please support my thanks button if I have been of any help

Check all the usual suspects - standby, chargers left plugged in, swap light bulbs for ee ones. As bryanb says the ones that heat up use most.
Lights off when not being used...
  • My Gas is always more then the electric .. gas ch, but everything else electric.

We spend more on gas. We're on a top up meter and spend (at the moment with central heating on) £15 a month on electricity and £30 a month on gas.
