The most important thing is, if you are able to obtain another credit card at 0% or at least a lower rate than your existing card, cut the existing card up and close the account.
Then you will still only have 2 cards and won't be tempted to spend on the existing card.0 -
I'd agree with the advice given so far.
You need an idea of whether you will be able to get a new card, but paying to see your credit score is not worth the money as different organisations work it out in different ways.
Are you on the electoral roll at your current address?
You do not have any late payments/defaults/CCJ's?
Are you in full time employment?
Are your current debts (not including the mortgage) less than 75% of your income?
You have not had more than 3 credit checks in the last 6 months?
Anyone you have a joint account with does not have defalts/CCJ's?
If the majority of these are true, then there should be a good chance of you getting a new card. Just be careful who you apply to as you cannot transfer to the same card provider.
I would use uswitch to see what the best balance transfer deals are right now.
Check that a transfer is possible with http://www.stoozing.com/cards.htm
And don't forget to look at the minimum payment requirement. No point getting a 0% card and struggling to meet the payments.
If you pay late on a 0% card, usually you lose the 0% rate and are put onto the standard CreditCard rate. You can ask to be put back to 0% if it is only a day or so late, but you need to keep on top of it.
Do not apply for cards en mass. Look for the best deal - even come back with a few options and ask what the best for a high limit may be.
And NEVER spend on a CreditCard that you have done a BalanceTransfer to. That is where the banks make their money. You will be paying off the lowest interest first and they will be taking the higher interest from you and adding it to your account. Defeats the whole purpose of getting a 0% card.
Note - if you are thinking of getting a HSBC card, it has been advised on the board that you do this in a branch rather than online as they do not give much of a limit online. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
