My son has just moved into new flat and quite a lot needs doing.. in the first instance a plumber is needed as pipes leaking under the sink and some pipework for dishwasher, washing machine needs moving. Then will need wardrobe doors rehung etc and some walls either hung with lining paper or replastered...the worst thing when you move somewhere new is not having any idea who is any good for all this sort of stuff. If anyone frequenting this bboard is in North London (son is N22, wood Green area) and can share any details of useful tradespeople by private messaging me, that would be wonderful. Many thanks

I don't live in the area but in case you don't get any replies you might want to try www.trustatrader.com
All tradesmen have been vetted and customers get to leave feedback so you can get comments on their previous work. You can search for a specific area and trade so it might be worth a look. I got a carpenter from there last month and he was great.
I have also used 50+ handymen service which put you in touch with reputable local handymen that are older or retired.

I am not wishing to be disparaging here, but as a tradesman I hate these referral sites and refuse to belong to any.
The reason is this, firstly they charge about £400 per annum so they have a vested ineterest in you the customer going thru them.
Secondly Some of them dont do any actual checks themselves, just take your word for it and photocopies of any qualifactions will do.
Thirdly, just about anyone can register on them. I note that on the one recommended, they want references, qualifcations IF Possible, and they dont say they will double check anything.
Furthermore just because someone has qualifactions and has opted to pay £400 doesn't mean he's any good, possibly quite the opposite.
As always, the best and surest method of finding a good tradesman is by word of mouth, reccomendation and personal refferal.
I never advertise except for a basic one line ad in yellow pages which is free. I get 99% of my work thru reccomendations and people coming across my website when searching.
Most decent tradesmen are so busy they dont need to advertise on such sites.
