Where did you buy it from? I am certain you can get an exchange.Alot of companies(not all) exchange up to 28 days and then after, repair up to 12 months after purchase.Obviously you need to contact them and ask. Regards, Elaine

What sort of warranty did you take out .. if it was an onsite warranty then they should come out and fix it. You don't say what equipment you have or your level of expertise but, assuming a Windows based PC, some of the following checks might help. Is it all sound or is it just certain sounds (sometimes a CD may still play but no other sounds can be heard)?

I assume you have checked the obvious (ie. that your speakers are plugged in to the correct socket, they are plugged into the mains (if applicable) and have been turned on with the volume control turned up - you would be surprised how many people don't check this).

Also have you checked that the volume slider (usually in your systray - bottom right of the windows screen) has been pushed to max and that the 'mute' checkbox has not been selected? If the volume control is not in your systray then look for the 'sounds and audio devices' in your 'control panel' (it has a volume slider and a mute checkbox as well).

If that doesn't work then you could check in device manager to see if the computer thinks your sound system is working properly. Sometimes you can simply remove the devices and allow the computer to reinstall them when it reboots (assuming XP). If you don't know what I am talking about here I would say to stay well away from device manager (it can really screw your system up).

Did you install or uninstall anything just before the sound stopped working?

There are a few other checks that can be done but some of them require taking the covers off and you need to know what to look for.

Also check if you can hear sound from files on your hd rather than a cd from an optical drive, this may suggest the audio cable has fallen off the connector. Do websites give sound when visited?

I just hope you didn't get it from PC World as they will not take it back for an exchange or even look at it instore unless you make an appointment and even then it will probably be sent away for a few days. I got my computer through there and after 1 week it packed in but because it was passed the 5 days they 'stated' i had to call their service call division who i then had to post it to for them to fix, which took 7 days to then have it sent back. the service call people where very nice and did everything very professionally but the manager in the pc world store was very rude, obnoxious, and childish. even the service call person agreed with me when i told him the whole story.

anyway hope you get it sorted.

    cheers.

  • Did you buy it from a stone and mortar store?
If so take it back and demand replacement/refund as it's not fit for purpose as stated in the sale of goods act 1979 amended 2000. If the unit is faulty within the first 6 months of purtchase the retailer has to prove that it was not faulty when you bought it.

Did you buy it from an online/mail order company?
If so reject it under the Distance Selling Regulations 2000.

Did you pay via credit card?
If you did and you have problems with either of the above write to your credit card company and CC the retailer and demand they resolve the problem as they are required to under the consumer credit act 1974.

Goto a small independant store who build systems to order, give them the spec of the one you just bought and see how much cheaper they can make it, might give you a better deal, and will probably be much better service than a high street store.

    Hope this helps.
