Nationawide Flexaccount Visa Debit - Minimum Balance

I went into Nationwide a month or two ago and asked them for a list of the requirements for a FlexAccount Visa debit card, but I was told there wasn't a list that they could give me?
I was told that they go through an internal credit check, and then if that passes, to an external credit check, but there was no way to check without moving my salary and direct debits into my Nationwide account and leaving them for 6 months before applying.
I do quite a lot of shopping online, so a standard Nationwide cash card is of use to me what-so-ever!0 -

I applied 1.5 years ago for a Nationwide account. They initially gave me a visa debit card, but I reapplied after they accidently cancelled my application, resulting in me only receiving a cash card. Silly! I asked how to get the debit card, and they also said to me that I would have to use the account (stupid because I spend online a lot), have my salary paid in etc... However, 1.5 years later, hardly using the account except for withdrawing cash abroad, I have reapplied for another flex account (can't just upgrade the cash card account), and been offered the Visa Debit card, as well as a credit card. I am a PhD student living on £12k a year at present... hope that helps!0 -
Nationwide have some very strange criteria, if any at all. I'm in full time employment and they refused to give me a debit card; they gave my girlfriend, who's younger than me, a student and has no credit history, one of them straight off!
Maybe you could do what I did with HSBC: open the cash card account, and then tell them that you'll only be able to switch all your stuff over if you have a debit card as it's essential for you. It worked for me (they'd rather have your money I think!)0 -
We've had a Nationwide Flexaccount for a couple of years. We just use it to withdraw our spends abroad.
We have no regular money paid in and no DD coming out.
We just transfer the money before our holidays form our main savings account at another bank.
It seems their requirements vary:j I love bargains:jI love MSE0 -

I recently got declined (with no notification - I had to ring up 3 weeks later after being told in-bank that my application was successful and that I'd have a card within 5 working days) and really want a card for my summer travels in South America, is there any point in me reapplying?
Their reasons were related to my address (it's term-time and my address given wasn't my home address) and related to my employment history (I think because I'm a student).
I was going to use it as my holiday card and set up a standing order from my main account to it to top it up all year round (so it would've been active).
Do you think there's any point in reapplying (with my home address listed) or would they just look at my previous application and decline me again? They didn't even ask me if it'd be my main account and I haven't been declined for anything before or have credit problems.0 -
I opened a Flex account with a visa debit card a year ago, and as far as I recall there weren't any requirements to maintain a minimum balance or pay in your salary etc (if there had been, I wouldn't have applied!).
I just use it for matched betting, so I do have money in there, but I use it in a very sporadic way, and have never had any problems.0 -
nope, I had one for years with nothing in it0

I think you should appeal, so that your home address details and so forth can be seen by a human being in head office. If you simply re-apply, the computer will bring up details of your rejection and is likely to generate another refusal without involving a human being, and of course one thing that computers lack is common sense.0
