Transfer of OS balance following hme move

Options
Hi all

In our old house the gal/elec was in my name and the OS balance is around £900. The new house is just in OH name so he has had my name taken off everything. However our gas/elec supplier have now transferred the balance from the old house (just in my name) to our new house (just in OH name) and increased the DD amount.

Can they do this if the bills are in different names?

Thanks

BSx

    They obviously can!! and have!!

However is it legal? Well I suspect this happens lots of times and it is a standard procedure.

Presumably the point of the exercise was to avoid paying the £900 bill as you are applying for bankruptcy?

However now the £900 is on OH's account he will have a problem of getting it removed, as he lived with you in the old house while you were running up the bill and so benefited from that energy.

If it finishes up in court I suspect you will get little sympathy
  • You're half right but not really an avoidance of paying. In the old house I paid the bill from my wages and dealt with the gas/elec bill. I didn't want to increase the dd (which I should have done) and OH knew nothing of this and needless to say isn't best pleased now as it's he not I taking the hike on the dd.

He'll pay it but it just seemed odd to me that they can do this.
  • Just for anyone who wants to know the outcome in case it's relevant to them. I contacted energywatch who put me in touch with a case handler and I've now setup a 2 year repayment plan with my supplier. I tried to do this myself but they refused, funny how things turn out when you get the big boys involved.
