In order to gt my OR/BR fee and downgrade to a cheaper car to run I sold my current car on e bay. The guys came to buy it yesterday and took it for a test drive. When they came came (40 minutes later!!) they told me they had found all sorts of (made up) problems with it and only offered me £250 (down from £820). They were very big men and I was very intimidated by them. Eventually they left as I couldn't accept the £250. After they drove away I went to lock the car back up and they had crashed it!!! I called the police and there is nothing I can do as I broke the law by letting them drive an uninsured car, something I never knew I would be held responsible for.
So I now have a crash damaged car that I can't possibly sell as it's seriously down valued now.
In addition I did something REALLY stupid. They wanted to know why a small problem that I had mentioned on e bay hadn't been fixed. I rather naively told them the truth. That my partner and I just split up and he wasn't here to fix it. It wasn't until I was woken up by a nightmare at 12.30 this morning that I realised I had let them know I was on my own and they saw that I live in an isolated cottage in the country. I am so frightened, I can't believe I did something so stupid without thinking.
Because I've cried so much about my relationship break up and my upcoming BR I just feel numb this morning and can't even have a good howl.

I sometimes wonder exactly WHAT the police do all day other than hound motorists
you have his ebay id
use ebay to get the "buyers" contact details and address
they will know you have done this but are unlikely to hassle you/burgle you when they know you have thier details
and get a big dog
im available most evenings for a small fee
oh.......sod the fee..............xxx0 -

So unless they told you they wernt insured and you in turn told the police how did they come to this conclusion?
And i may be wrong, but when i worked and had a company car, it was my responsibilaty to make sure i was insured before a got into any of the companys vehicles as i found out when i got done for speeding only to find out the policy had lapsed. My employer, the owner of the car, wasnt liable at all acording to my local police, so unless something in law has changed it doesnt sound right as its the same situation really as they let me drive the car when it was uninsured and they had no come back from thatThats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all ………….0 -
Blind as a bat, the police asked me if the car was insured (it's not) and apparently it is my fault for letting an uninsured car on the public road. Thank you for your input.
maxmycardagain - thanks for the offer!!! the dog thing made me laugh as I have a Chihuahua who weighs less than a kilo!! and is smaller than my cat!0 -
Their third party insurance is only valid is you have insurance on your own car.
Its a total bummer. I live on my own (with the kids!) and bought some window alarms on Ebay yesterday - I intend to fit them to every window and external door. Its not great in the big scheme of things, but the sound should scare anyone off if anyone is daft enough to confront an angry Mummy. (I have a Westie, who lets face it, is not going to scare anyone off - but he barks loudly and would have a damn good go!)
And the window alarms were not that expensive.0 -
Skylight, that's a great idea, I have never seen them before. Unfortunately I am 4 weeks into my 8 week end of tenancy notice period so not worth the cost I'm afraid. But will definitely look into wherever I end up!!!0

Sorry to hear what happened, gambit - some people are scum, but hopefully they won't have got away with it, & you'll be able to pass the info you get from eBay to the police.
I've put one of those alarms on my back door. I usually keep the door locked, but one day the phone rang & I went upstairs to answer it, then took my medication & fell asleep for hours. It was after 10pm at night when my neighbour rang me & asked if everything was OK, as she'd noticed the door was open & didn't like to let herself in or let her husband come in either in case they gave me a heart attack. Mine makes a fierce noise if the door is opened before it's switched off. They're well worth the money for the peace of mind, & if you put them on windows too you should let your insurance company know, as you may be entitled to reduced premiums for having them.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

wherediditallgo, thank you for that. Yes, they are scum. I don't know where these peoples morals can be. I am as honest as the day is long and am gutted they did this to me. I think these people don't think of what the other persons story might be. My case is that I live at the other end of the country to all of my family and have a daughter with ADHD. I am desperate to get back to my family for some support. As you have probably read I live in the middle of nowhere, as I also work from home the only other bloody things I see are cows!!!
I have today also booked my BR hearing, Thursday at 10!!!! Arghhhh, now I can't make up my mind to use this months rent or take up my dear sisters offer of a loan for the fees.0 -
what a bummer !
make sure you do an unpaid item dispute to get your end of auction fees back and also default your buyer
save all emails you have regarding end of auction and bidding transactions
and print screen/screen cap and save any other details from your My Ebay area on this transaction
make a note of item no and buyers Ebay name as you will need this on any Ebay communication you make
I am concerned as to what they have hit and if you will receive a claim from someone else's insurance company[ sorry for any worry this may cause you, I am just thinking ahead, dont forget they had your name and address and your reg no could be traced to you ] any emails you have will show the auction ended and they had bought the car before they came to you so could maybe help in a problem
get your buyers personnel info and use it where ever you can in getting professional help in the event of any ongoing problems
the buyer had bid to buy and had entered into a contract, had no right to try and bid you down after the event, maybe Ebays Safety Centre can offer some help
it might help to post on the insurance and ebay forum areas as well, maybe someone else has had a similar experience
good luck, I know you had took the insurance off the car but what they have done is just downright out of order0
