Van hire - excess on insurance

Cloud cuckoo land ? Ha what a joke.
HOW DARE YOU CALL ME RECKLESS. You don't even know me - DO NOT draw judgmental statements like that.
I can't believe how unhelpful people are on here. I am standing up for basic rights as a human and to be treated with respect in my dealings with the world, not to be ripped off left right and centre by people out to make a quick buck.
As I said previously, post constructively or don't bother posting at all.0 -
"Tough lesson to learn and expensive but you'll never be so reckless with a hire vehicle again!"
And don't patronise. It's rude.0 -

And on a further note, just to prove my point about being ripped off, you can purchase something called CDW which for the paltry sum of £32, I could have waived the entire excess. Interesting that they didn't try and sell me that isn't it ?
Sorry, it's a complete rip-off. As a nice, previous, constructive poster said, as you will see, fight it and that's what I will do.0 -
well the same goes for most policys that you can reduce/negate the excess by paying more.
how did you organise it?
when ive done it(in person) there was always a big section on the form0 -
magictorch,
Where did you get the 2 quotes from? Did you drive the damaged car to some bodyshops and ask for private quotes? There's no point telling the hire company that your mate who works in a garage thinks it'll cost £200.
At the end of the day the hire company can decide where and when they want the car to be repaired without reference to you or to the level of costs as long as those costs are reasonable. If someone damaged my car I would chose the best bodyshop to repair it even if that bodyshops costs were higher.
I've returned a car to Hertz recently and the headlamp was damaged by a stone. I had a £750 excess and my company was charged about £80 to replace the glass.
At the end of the day - will repairing the van cost more than £500 when you factor in all the other costs and losses that the hire company will suffer? The man without a signature.0 -
Whether or not the hire company repairs the van or not is irrelevant. They either have the cost of repairing the vehicle and the loss in revenue which could easily span a week or they are penalised for the damage when the vehicle comes to the end of its hire life.0

Be that as it may, they can't just take £500 off someone just like that.
They need to demonstrate that there is at least £500 worth of damage...."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

Hi
I hired a LWB van last week. One of the terms and conditions was talking about they would charge for a full daily rental if they have to fix the van for any reason i might be held responsible for, plus the costs of the repair.
I am not quite sure but this may take 3 days to fix. One day to get qoutes ( I am saying one day as they can't rent the van out while they are getting qoutes, or, if they want to rent it out, they won't be able to get the qoutes) Another day to fix the car at the bodyshop. A third day to polish it and make it shine like it was before. £50 pounds per day rental fees, that is £150. £200 to fix it ( as you said ) Plus adminsteration charge ( Paper work, a person to do the leg work from getting qoutes to collecting the van when it will be finished)
Whether they will fix it or not, it's up to them. It is like when some old cars get written off by the insurance company because of a small damage. Some people choose to keep the car as it is and have the money instead of fixing the car.
Chances are you might get it down to £400 after you fight for it.
I just remembered one of their silly terms and conditions. Regarding fuel, they will charge me £1.5 per liter admin fee plus the fuel cost if I return the car with less fuel in the tank than I took it away!!! What a rip off!!
Good luck
EDIT: You may take them to court, but there is a good chance that they will try their best to push the cost over £500 pounds by exaggerating their costs in admin etc.Be nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -

I hate to say this but a better driver probably wouldn't have tried in the first place.0
