What's this for? Wikipedia says 5-HTP raises blood serotonin levels, and because of the risks associated with elevated levels it should only be taken under the advice of a medical professional (See Chronic diseases resulting from serotonin 5-HT2B overstimulation). For instance, elevated blood serotonin levels are associated with cardiac valve failure and acute or chronic pulmonary hypertension.
It sounds cheap, but it also sounds like it could kill you.0 -
It's used by ravers, as it boosts seratone levels to beat the 'come down' after a fun weekend bouncing around on their disco biscuits! :rotfl:
It's also used to help with sleep and beat depression.0 -
so its actually used to 'help' go to sleep - or keep awake. I'd love something good to help sleep as get quite restless at night, but dont want to go to docs. Have tried the herbal remedies in past when on a flight but didnt seem to work one bit. Would love something that could knock me out quite easily0
-
Why not go to the doctor? You're paying for the service already, and the doctor probably knows more about prescribing psychoactive drugs, and their side effects, than a shop assistant or someone off the internet. This stuff can mangle your heart valves apparently, and you really ought to take medical advice before using it.0
-
these aren't knockout drops, but they do make you feel like you are going to go to sleep more
Sometimes they work for me, not always
I tried a few things to help sleep, from the doc, herbal etc, these worked best and from what I read about them no side effects, associated health problems etc.
But a lot of sleep problems are caused by things like diet, alcohol, exercise routines, watching tv late etc0 -
as long as they work..... that's the main thingUse your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0

5-HTP is a seratonin precursor, you body needs to produce 5-HTP in order to synthesise seratonin, the danger is if you take them with SSRI drugs(prozac, fluoxitine etc), The 5-HTP you buy is the crumbled bean of an african plant called griffonia simplificolia, if your looking for a natural sleep remedy look up valerian0
-
5-HTP does not produce or introduce seratonin.
What 5-HTP does (don't always trust Wikipedia, it can be edited by anyone!) is it introduces the building blocks for the body to produce 5-HTP (i.e. the "food" that is needed to make 5-HTP)
I've tried it, didnt notice any difference. Presently trying St Johns Wort. It has been around a lot longer.0 -
Found this site selling 5HTP Tablets and they come "supplied in a stylish, re-sealable, pouch that keeps the contents fresh, and slides effortlessly through your letter-box" its great as i dont have to go the the post office everytime any more to pick up my order.0
