Cheapest way to get there? Try National Express coaches http://www.nationalexpress.com/ or Train Cardiff to Birmingham New Street, then change to Leicester.0

Good places to see
National Space Centre
Leicester Tigers Rugby Club (if there is a game on)
The Shires (if you like shopping!)
About 20 minutes away is the market town of Melton Mowbray, surrounded by some really nice villages, also Belvoir Castle isnt too far.
Also some good small gig venues
Sumo
The attic
The Charlotte
The Shed
The musician
Good places to eat
Any of the Curry restaurants on the Melton Road
The noodle bar (near the shires)
Skint Catt is right, both are cheap ways to travel to leicester and both dump you right in the city centre0 -
In addition to everything already mentioned, if you'll have transport once in Leicester, then out in the county there's Bradgate Park, Snibston Discovery Park, the Great Central Railway, Rutland Water and Oakham Castle among others.
In Leicester (public transport) there are several free museums, the Abbey Park, and by July the open top bus tours will have started again.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
Whatever you do, make sure you take a trip to Bobby's on Belgrave Rad (for a traditional Gujerati buffet lunch), Moghul Darbar for an amazing evening meal, or even Zaytoun in Highfields
Also, there's a few mobile catering places that do the rounds in and around Highfields area - they are amazing!0 -
If you're taking kids (under 10 / 12) Twin Lakes at Melton Mowbray is a nice day out. Melton market (Tuesdays) is very good. As mentioned before, Space museum is well worth a visit, and there is a free museum opposite, in an old pumping station0
