Giving workmen gifts

Is it expected to give workmen a little gift or anything when they've finished a job?
We've had a couple of electricians in for nearly 3 weeks and were wondering if we should give them something like a couple of bottles of wine or £20 each. We've been happy with their work (although not so happy with their boss).

To tip or not to tip, that is the question.
It is all the same thing really, whether you give them money, bottles or whatever. We have had so many workmen in over the years, and to be honest after all the brews (several per day) and biscuits/cakes etc I have provided them with, I don't think they have done so badly out of me.
It really is up to the individual, and how they feel about the work that has been carried out and the people doing it. The only thing is that if you give to the electricians, and the boss thinks he is also due something then you could have a problem.
Go with your instincts and you won't go far wrong.0 -
As a tradesman myself i hardly ever get gifts after completing a job and if we do it is normally a bottle of wine on a few cans of beer hardly ever money which is a good job as i am sure the boss would pocket it or want a share

Well i can honestly say that being a tradesman too that we don't ever expect anything but anything we get is allways a nice surprise.
You tend to find that the poeple with money tend not to offer you anything and it's normally the elderly (that they've probably saved for ages) that hand you a tenner or a few cans of lager after you've finnished .
I've had easter eggs, selection boxes, wine, lager and even one elderly couple bought a toy for our baby as i was just back from paternity leave earlier this year.
As for the BOSS don't worry about them, their making a profit from YOU so if your handing the men something, do it when he's not there/looking and i'm sure they aren't gonna tell him.0 -
I don't always give workmen something , it depends on the size of the job and how well they've done it!
Gave the two who did the kitchen a bottle of wine each because we knew they were wine drinkers , but the 2 who did the bathroom got a 24 pack of lager to share. I don't think i'd ever give money though .Same old same old since 20080
