Garden turf - Best time to lay it?

I wanna lay it in about 6 weeks time, but my mate said the best time would be early march next year, but then we would have no grass for 6 months.

Is there a best time to lay it?

I'd say laying new turf October/November would be better, as it should settle in well and be kept moist with the weather

If it was a new lawn from seed, then I'd want to be doing it in March

If you prepare the ground now, wait till any weeds grow then spray them off with a glyphosphate weedkiller, you will have plenty of time before seeding in late September early October. Your new lawn will be established by March next year.
Sowing a lawn is cheaper.
Sowing enables you to choose the correct grass mix for the purpose.
