Who insures belongings in car?

My car insurance is due for renewal and in the course of getting quotes I noticed that the insurer I was considering only insured personal belongings up to a value of £250, which isn't a lot (I'm thinking of luggage, sports equipment, CDs, etc). Are belongings such as these in transit generally covered by home contents insurance rather than car insurance?

I hate this time of year, renewing my insurance always gets me all flustered. :o

Depends on the insurence, it does on mine but I also pay for contents worldwide cover, my items covered worldwide.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

£250 while not alot is not too bad mine is £100! with admiral Im not sure about home ins covering this i doubt it but for things like my laptop I pay extra for it to be insured when taken outy the house. I think this covers all items up to £2500

The problem is that going through Quidco everything has to be done online. There was no option to increase the level of cover and I didn't want to have to phone them and risk not getting my cashback. ;) £250 wouldn't cover my snowboard never mind boots/bindings and all the other paraphernalia that goes with it (multiplied by three if kids are with me). Guess I'll have to dig out and check the house policy...

You will need either personnal possessions/belongings to be able to claim on your home contents cover, although bear in mind that there will be a monetery limit on what you can claim- usually £1000 from a car.

You need 'personal possessions (away from home)' cover on your household contents insurance.

Did this last year as my travel insurance was poor on that aspect. But it basically doubled the cost of my content policy .... so it's back onto a slightly better travel policy this year.

How have you got your snowboard covered? We have bikes/kayaks on the house insurance as 'named items' with their value individually on the policy. It puts up the cost of your home insurance - but then if your car is broken into - as ours was on holiday in France a couple of years ago, we just claimed on the house insurance for the theft of property from the car and the car insurance for a new window. We were with Cornhill Direct and they were brilliant sorting everything out.
