Does a blue badge make a difference to car insurance policy?

Options
I am asking on behalf of an ill relative, whose doctor is suggesting that they sign them off (on?) for a blue badge.

Apart from the huge pride issue which I am trying to help him overcome (he really doesn't want to be seen/admit to being disabled), now he's concerned about what effect it will have on his car insurance premium, & ability to insure his car.

I have no idea....and thought I'd ask here first.

I dont think it will affect his premium, unless its something like epilepsy or a heart condition that he suffers from.

If he qualifies for Disability Living Allowance, and he gets the high rate mobility part of it, he can get a mobility car that will be insured etc for him.

Remember that he will now be exempt from road tax too now.

Hope this helps a wee bit.

I'm about 99% sure that having a blue badge doesn't grant you from road tax exemption, you need to be getting the higher rate mobilty element of DLA to get it.
I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....

    Thanks for your answers.

He doesn't get DLA, nor do I think he'd want to apply for it (even discussing a blue badge has been difficult ;) ). He has his own car.

The main problem is that he can rarely park anywhere near his house, meaning that he doesn't use it, for fear of not being able to park it when he gets home. [he's in a residents parking zone, where as usual the council have sold twice the number of permits as there are spaces....and the front garden is too small to become an off street space]

Being able to actually use his car would make such a huge difference to him. It should also help keep him out of hospital, which is where he is now after yet another fall.

I've been looking at the blue badge site, & he would certainly qualify under this criteria ; have a permanent and sustainable disability which means you cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult.

Would he then have to apply for a blue badge, & then apply to the council for his own designated road parking space?

They are quite strict on blue badges, it isn't easy to get one despite what some people claim not legally anyhow

He will have to pay a small admin fee and supply two passport photos or pc equivalent and fill form in from local council

He may be asked to attend a medical test, ie to check whether walking is a problem or any relevant disability etc

My daughter got turned down initially despite having a a permanent medical condition which effects walking and balance. I appealed and won, dla was a whole lot harder. I applied twice for her and she got turned down twice. She won in Jan and got back paid to Jul 07 she should have got back to Jun 07 including 3 months you cant claim for which we are still fighting for for one month.

The worse that can happen is he could get turned down and he is out of pocket by a few quid

You get road tax free with you are in receipt of high rate dla and automatically get a blue badge, the vehicle can be used by others (as our case is) but it is primarily for the person with dla higher rate.

Also if you have high rate dla you can get a bus pass and he may be able to get some one to go with in on the bus for free, it depends on your council
