Figuring out VAT / Import Charges

Hi i am about to get a shipment of items imported from brazil it will be between 1 to 4 boxes 75cm by 75cm by 75cm, The value of the item inside of each box will be around £500/700 mark in total. How much will i have to pay in taxes and charges? Will i have to pay this upfront? afterwards? more information would be wonderful thanks

I assume its coming via courier.

You will have to pay VAT on cost price plus shipping cost. Sometimes you will get away with just cost price but highly unlikely with a courier.

You will then have to pay their clearance fee not sure how mich that is check with the courier but probably upto around £20 per box.

You will then possibly have import duty (http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds/cgi-bin/tarchap?Lang=EN) and find out if that is payable. This is normally not too much 2-5% but might be zero.

So I would be expecting to pay somewhere between 20% and 25% all in. The courier will probably deliver and then bill you but might want the cash up front.

Info above is all correct, I'd just add that the duty depends on the items. Best place of reference is HMRC for duty charges.
