Its still doing it, I agree its not a mouse problem, the whole PC freezes.

Any ideas about what is wrong?

    Been happening for ages now.

    No virus or spyware.

Try using the system restore application from START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM RESTORE and role your system state back to a date that you knew everything was ok, this MAY solve your problem.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

That would be so long ago. Months perhaps even a year or more, its that far back.

Would I not loose things done since then?

    New installs, updates, just stuff?

Your system takes a snap shot pretty frequently, run the system restore and check the calendar to find the most recent date, the items that will be effected will be updates and new programs, your files i.e pictures etc will NOT be deleted, so if you have a restore point say only a week ago this should be ok just remember you will have to reinstall your programs that you have put on during that time frame.

I've had this freeze problem for a year or more, wouldn't that mean I have to restore back to over a year or more?

It sounds like a faulty piece of hardware, I would recommend as a precaution that you seek the help of a local technician or take it to a reputable computer store, if the system operates ok without the mouse then it sounds like it could be the mouse hardware and/or software driver.

Really not trying to be arkward here.

But the mouse is always plugged in & always in use when the PC is, so I don't understand?

But apart from that, I've realised its the whole PC thats freezing, not just5 the mouse.

I had a complete restore (done by a tech, just over a year ago - after the blue screen of death, LOL).

I can't remember if it done it before then or since then, its been happening so long. I should have addressed it when it started & I wouldn't be so in the dark now:confused:
  • Might need a quick once over before a windows clean install.
1 This might break your nails so don't sue me :-)
2 Open pc and remove ram sticks and check that a)the brand b)speed and type number c)if more than one stick they are all identical.

Its happened for a long time now so back to basics. Also keep a note of what you find/do to the pc, it will help later.

Before the OP rips their PC apart, I've seen almost exactly these symptoms on a PC which did not have up-to-date drivers for the graphics card.

If it's not already in bits (if it is you won't be reading this!), try going to the Windows Update website and check for updates - look in the hardware section, and try installing any that are available for your hardware.

    Thank you.
I went on the Microsoft website. I have all the critical updates (I have them done automatically).
There were 9 software updates & 6 hardware updates NOT installed, so I've downloaded & installed them.
Hopefully this will solve it, the idea of me opening it is a bit scary.
