Free Publishers Guide (For ppl who love writing and would like to get published)

After watching murder most famous on BBC2 this week in aid of National Book Week, I have deicided to try and get my work published. I came across this website freebie which obviously won't interest everyone.

Let me know if anyone has any fiction writing interest or have tried in the past to have their work published. I would love to hear your stories. :o

I've had several short stories and various articles published. It's damned hard work!

I have read a lot about it on the net and I have noticed that everyone near enough puts you off by telling you how hard it is to be published!! At least with both your replies, it shows it is actually possible. Thank you both!!

AuthorHouse are a known vanity publisher - they publish any book and they charge you to publish it. Unless you're publishing non-fiction of very limited interest (i.e., your family history or some such thing), vanity publishers are not recommended, and definitely not money-saving! Proper publishers pay you, not the other way around.

Because vanity publishers basically accept anything, it means that your book won't be taken seriously and will be dismissed by the rest of the publishing industry, regardless of its quality. Along with having to pay to have your book published, your book won't make it into major bookstores (excluding online ones), be reviewed by professional reviewers, receive proper publicity, get into libraries, etc. Also, your rights can be tied up by the vanity publisher, and if you do manage to break into real publishing, you will have a lot of troubles getting a book published by a vanity press ever republished by a real one.

Vanity publishers and print-on-demand publishers (also basically vanity publishers) are scammers who prey on the insecurities of struggling writers.

Sometimes, but you'll never make your fortune. With Forward Press you can get royalties, but obviously if they don't reach certain sales targets then there's no royalties. It's just nice to say that you're a published author though :D

Forward Press are a really good company in my eyes. :) I've had quite a few of my poems published with them. A lot of people ask me if I get paid for it and I think you and I both know that the answer is no, unless you won the Top 100 Poets Of The Year competition which they discontinued but to me it's all about experience. :)

Wow, what a response, thank you all for your helpful information. It is really great to hear people say they got their work published. I am writing my first book at the moment and despite the negativity of struggling to get it published I am going to give it my best shot.

Maybe I will re-post with free copy of ebook in the future.

Special thanks to lilitu93 for links, I will certainly read up on them.

I wish you all the luck in the world. :)

I've always ignored people when they tell me I can't do anything. You can do anything you set your mind too. :)

Good luck and keep us posted. :D
