£360 Gas Bill for winter quarter - Normal???? (Southern Elec)

Hi,

We have just got our gas bill through the post from the end of november to the end of feb for just over £360 !! This seems absoloutely enormous?

We have a large, old semi-detached house with 4 bedroms, 2 baths, living room, dining room and a large glass-fronted entrance room that used to be an old off license... no double glazing anywhere... We only use gas for heating and cooking, electric shower etc....

Apparently we used 1,200 units in this time, no idea how many Kwh... We're with Southern Electric?
Currently wondering whether we've been leaving the gas on by accident, have it on for 2 hours in the morning, then about 4-5 in the evening....

Any help much appreciated!!!

Amy

    Welcome to the forum

As you describe your house a bill of £360 is perfectly understandable.

    1,200 units is approx 13,300 kWh -

We've just had a similar bill from Eon for the same period. Compared to last year this is more than twice what we used. I expected it to be more than normal but not over twice as much !!! I'm currently monitoring the usage over a week to get a rough idea with Eon to see if there maybe a problem with our meter... ?

We also got a very high gas bill, nearly 3 times the price than last years, we're with EDF. We have used slightly more than last year but before this bill we were £50 in credit now £80 in debt

Have you still got your bill for the same period last year? If so, check the number units consumed in both periods. The price of energy has greatly increased recently, so you may have been using roughly the same amount of units but recent units have been charged at a much higher cost. If this is the case, it sounds as if some added insulation and wearing a few extra clothes indoors might help you reduce your consumption. Also, your large glass front room needs some focusing on as this cold area may be drawing in heat from other areas of the house
  • we have a smallish 2/3 bed semi and our bill has just come through for £175.00 so sounds about right i would think

Just get a monthly direct debit set up based on your average annual usage.

    No more winter bill shocks.

Is it not a lot easier to pay your utilities monthly?

Ours was 6,700 kWh (Gas for heating and cooking) for approximately the same period. So about half of yours. I have an 1930's extended three/four bed semi. However it is fully double glazed with over 11 inches of insulation in the attic. During this period the OH was at home with our newborn so heating would of been on a bit more than normal.

I would suggest sorting your loft insulation followed by draft proofing doors and windows (Letterboxes etc). Maybe consider double glazing and or reducing the size of the large frontage window.

PS Wickes has 3 for 2 on loft insulation at the moment and it is very easy to install. Took me about 20 minutes.
