Barclaycard asking for payment after 7 Year gap

I was recently contacted by Barclaycard asking why i haven't made a payment in some time, now i have been paying off my barclayloan and account through cabot financial and i thought i was paying for the barclaycard as well but it turns out I'm not. The last payment i made to the account was in june 2001, the balance was only £850. This was around the same time i set up the repayments to Cabot, so i thought nothing of it when all correspondence stopped. In the last 7 years i didn't receive any contact from them until now.
Can they do this after such a long time?
and what can I do?
I'm a student at the moment and i really can't afford another debt hanging over me.
Any ideas?
Karren

Are they asking you to pay interest on it as well for the last 7 years?
  • no, reduced payments on a concessionary basis.
But why after 7 years are they doing this now? i asked them and they couldn't answer. They just want their money, it's mostly charges anyway.

If there really has been no communications on this debt for 7 years, then it is now unenforceable. It is know as "Statute Barred" and they have no legal rights to claim it.

However, do not admit any liability for the debt as if you do, then this would reverse the "Statute Barred" status.

There is information of the Limitation Act and "Statute Barred" debts here:

If you are unsure of the status of the Barclaycard debt, then it may be worth having a chat with a NDL advisor. The advice lines are free.
