Old, high mileage cars?

  • My car is on 200,500 miles and I am supremely confident that it will easily double that without any major work.

It emits no smoke, burns no oil, and makes no odd noises - and still pulls 0-60 at book figures.

So long as the engine has had regular oil and filter changes, it will be fine. Your friends don't know what they're talking about sucking their teeth like that.

another good tip...drive carefully until the temp gauge has moved up a bit, staying under 3000 revs until the oil is warm helps alot

very true, and even truer on cars with a turbo which also benefit from a controlled cool down before switch off after working hard.

I've got an N reg Escort 1.6 Mexico with 115k on the clock.
I bought it when it had 100k, never let me down yet. (Goes off to find some wood to touch).

i've bought 3 cars with 90k on the clock and ythey've never let me down , i've had a peugeot with 36k when i got it that needed a new engine at 60k but still managed another 100k
if the car's been looked after and the bodywork is in good order i'd have no worries
after all there's nothing quite like seeing a new merc or bmw at the side of the road with the bonnet up

Not that it's relevant here, bit you can get systems in car alarms that automatically let the car run on to help protect the turbo. Suppose you look as much an idiot walking away from the car with the engine running as sitting in the car with the engine running for no reason.

We have a 1994 Volvo 940 S automatic 2.0 litre owned from new, 140000 on the clock and just "run-in"! No fancy stuff like air con or leather seats, but it does have self levelling suspension and a detachable towbar. It has never given us any trouble, lots of older cars can still be good cars.

Full service history too. We love it, but it is now surplus to requirements as OH has retired, so unfortunately we are looking to sell. Where would be the best place to sell and what is it worth?

OH and all the other Subaru Impreza owners we know all drive under the 3000 revs till oil temp is warm then drive normally and then when OH and his mates pull up on the drive they just leave the cars running for a minute then turn them off . Very noisy though when you have several Impreza's just sitting there running . I have heard about these systems , wonder if they are any good or just a waste of money when you only need to leave it to idle for a minute ?
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
    Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

They might be noisy but it is a delightful noise.

My S4 (and I think most of the Audi S cars) have something called an after run pump. This is a little electric water pump that pumps water through the turbo(s) for a couple of mins after the engine is switched off to take the heat out and stop the oil cooking.
  • Don't get me wrong , I love the sound of all the scooby's . Neighbours are less enthralled when he goes to work at 3.30am ! :rotfl:He has de-catted 2 exhaust sections , no buffer on the rear box which is massive , you could shove an orange up there with room to spare and a massive air induction kit so it is really loud . Love going through the Blackwall and Dartford Tunnel as it is sooooooooo noisy .
