  • I love bubble and squeek and quite often make it on purpose rather than waiting for left overs. It freezes well so that's were the surplus goes, but it does take ages to defrost.

Yes we do ! had it last week and loved it! yum yum yum!;)
    Do what you love :happyhear
  • LOve it, but don't often get the chance as no-one else eats cooked cabbage in my house:rolleyes:

I do make a hash out of the Christmas lunch leftovers though. This year it was; goose, gravy, peas and carrots and roast potatoes. It was good ;)

I've never tried bubble and squeak (don't think it's an Irish thing) but I do use up every last bit of sad looking veg in soup or something or other. Dd's boyfriend laughed and said, "Everything gets used up in this house" when I asked him to put the left over liquid from cooking the gammon into the fridge in the garage.

No dustbin feeding here if I can help it. ;)

Off to find out how to make bubble and squeak......

When you are doing your mash, pop an onion in and boil it with your potatoes then mash it up with the potatoes.

Yo Jackie, Happy New Year! Good to see you again!

The OS Foodie Brigade (me :D ) eats Bubble and Squeak with great relish, you'll be pleased to know - just a couple of days ago we had a great big plateful made of brussel sprouts, chestnuts, roasted potatoes, parsnips and buttered leeks, all leftovers from Xmas meal, accompanied by thinned, re-warmed gravy!

Another OS foodie way is to make Bubble and Squeak with potatoes and homegrown Cavolo Nero (you can't get it more Foodie than this LOL) - this is a very dark kale that you can also use to make the Tuscany soup 'Ribollita' (recipe here: http://www.divinacucina.com/code/ribollita.html )

    Food glorious food....

    Hi Pink,

Only recently I had this conversation with an Irish friend, over a meal, whether Bubble and Squeak and Colcannon are the same thing, and we came to the conclusion that the difference is in the way of cooking the mixture:

Bubble and squeak: Mash everything in a frying pan and fry in oil

Colcannon: Mash everything in a casserole of sorts and put butter or cream in it while still hot.

Don't know if this is right but that's the (slightly drunken) conclusion we reached!
