Wickes New Plaster paint for ceilings and walls

I am painting newly plastered ceilings and walls. I have read the previous posts about a mist coat. However, I went into Wickes and they recommeded their new plaster paint - they said that it would not need watering down at all before application.
Have any of you used this and do you think it is OK to use?

Many thanks for any advice.

  • We are currently using watered down emulsion paint. Bought two of the cheapest biggest pots from B&Q. Covers well and provides a good base for our chosen finish.

    Never used new plaster paint.

We bought some of this stuff and it was REALLY thick going on so we did a couple of coats but watered it down.

I have never used the 'Wickes' new plaster paint, but used thier ordinary emulsion, client had already bought, it was a nightmare, never covered, had to use quite a few coats.

But, if you go to your local dulux decorating centre, and buy 10 Ltr tubs of 'Gliddens contract matt', it will do a fantastic job, but you have to water it down by about 25-30%, but it will go further.
A 10 ltr tub, including vat, works out approx £16, plus if you pay cash they usually give you a 10% discount.
Its made by ICI, I use it all the time on new plaster, plus its brilliant as a base coat anywhere in the house prior to applying your proper coats.(even silk) :D
  • emma lou, just found this post, i also had to paint new plaster and made a few mistakes so i hope i can help.

first of all i decided to use own brand kitchen and bathroom paint - big mistake! i did add water but to be honest i didnt mix it up properly so it wasnt properly watered down paint. anyway after having to chisel out some plaster for cables i noticed the paint was just coming off in big strips. it hadnt soaked into the plaster, it was just a film on top.

once i tidied the mess from the cable chasing, i cut round an area with a stanley knife and stripped the paint off up to this point, not all of it would come off easily so i just took off an area.

so back to bare plaster on half the room, i decided this time to do it another way. i almost bought the wickes new plaster paint but my plasterer actually suggested applying watered down 50/50 pva mix on the walls first. this seals the plaster. i think its a kind of cheat, and may not be good long term but it seems to be ok. he said i could paint on top of this with standard emulsion and not water it down. so i did this and it seems fine.

but emmalou, my advice would be either of 2 options:
1- use the wickes new plaster paint and follow the instructions on the tin
2- use good quality (eg wickes master) matt emulsion and water it down well, at least 1 part water 4 parts paint, ideally even more. the more watery it is the better, as it soaks in so quickly. for the next coat ideally water it down again but not as much. final coat can be neat paint.

hope this helps - by the way how are you getting on with your kitchen, did you make a decision in the end ?
