Myself and a few friends all became 64 in March 2008. We have all been given a tax allowance of £5435 for 08/09. Surely this is wrong!! The phone number given on the form (which I have tried dozens of times) answers and then and immediatly cuts off.0

boobbby, surely you do not get the higher allowance until you are 65??(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Boobbby is correct, you get the higher allowance if you are going to be 65 during the 08/09 FINANCIAL year. Like me.0

Just checked with my 2008-09 PAYE coding notice which I got in February and my personal allowance is £9030. My 64th birthday was in January Boobbby, so we're more or less the same and I think you should call them and have it sorted out.0

Many thanks for confirming my suspicions. 3 of my friends who where all 64 in March have also been given the wrong PAYE coding. As I said before I have tried many times to phone the number on the PAYE form but it answers with the the message "try again later" and cuts off. This is an 0845 number so they are making money each time I call and try to correct their mistake.0 -
I won't be 65 until Dec.2008 but have the increased personal allowance for tax year 2008-2009. I phoned to make sure I got it. You are entitled for the whole of the financial year your 65th birthday falls in so anyone who was 65 in March 2008 should have received the increased personal allowance for tax year 2007-2008 (I think), getting confused now :rotfl:0

well, if it's the tax office, I would guess they're pretty busy, as it's the end of the financial year. try them around 8am in the morning.0

"so anyone who was 65 in March 2008"
boobbby was 64 in March, not 65.0 -

I managed to get through on the phone today. They tell me that the reason I was initially given the £5435 allowance (even though they knew I was eligable for the £9030 allowance) was that I might just be earning over £21800. It was up to me to ring them and let them know I was not going to earn that amount. Just a load of rubbish as I have not earned anything like that ever! Anyway sorted now !!0
